Becoming PCI compliant: an overview

In recent years, the credit card industry has established a set of guidelines with which merchants must conform in order to become "PCI compliant" - compliant with a set of security standards established by the credit card industry as a whole. The credit card company Visa also requires that merchants become "CISP compliant" - compliant with Visa's specific set of standards.

At RedSky IT, we are committed to the process that will ensure that our flagship products, Entirety and ImagInn, are PCI compliant. To that end, we have partnered with AmbironTrustWave , the leading provider of information security and compliance management solutions, and the only company authorized by all major credit card associations to validate compliance.

Learn more about what it means to be PCI and CISP compliant

Since June 2001, Visa has required that any businesses involved in credit card transactions be CISP compliant. CISP stands for "Cardholder Information Security Program," and companies and products that are CISP compliant have gone through certain steps to become certified as secure by Visa.

In 2004, the credit card industry, including Visa, as well as MasterCard, Discover, and American Express, came together to create the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard. Now businesses and products must also become PCI compliant by completing 12 basic requirements and by undergoing periodic reviews. Four merchant categories have been established to further structure how a company must undergo the process of becoming PCI compliant, although these categories are constantly undergoing refinement and revision. As a result, it is important for all merchants to monitor changes to these requirements, even if they have already established compliance.

RedSky IT is dedicated to helping hotels and other merchants who wish to learn more about the process of becoming PCI and CISP compliant. Our whitepaper "Ensuring credit card security via PCI compliance: what hotels need to know" is now available and offers in-depth information about the steps that must be undertaken for a company or product to be declared PCI compliant.
